Cataracts?

June 23, 2022

You have probably heard about cataracts. Either from your grandparents, parents or even your friends. So what are they exactly and why do people get them?

A cataract forms when the lens (internal focussing part) of your eye becomes cloudy or opaque. Just like a camera that has a yellowed or dirty lens, the images that you see with a cataract become reduced in clarity. As a result, you might experience blurry vision, have trouble at night, see things more yellow and experience sensitivity to light (no matter how good your glasses are!)

There are many causes for cataracts, but the most common is aging. The lens structure naturally changes as a person ages. People over age 60 usually start to have some impact to their vision, but others may not experience any changes until many years later.

Other causes include family history, sun exposure, medical conditions e.g. diabetes, smoking, eye injury and certain medications.

If you're worried about cataracts or just want to know how your eyes are, you can give us a call to book an appointment.
